Marjet Janmaat - Fantasy Creations In Utrecht heb ik enkele jaren de kunstacademie gevolgd en wilde me daarna in eerste instantie toeleggen op het maken van sieraden. Na enige tijd ontdekte ik dat het maken van fantasiewezens uit boetseerklei me enorm beviel. De klei waarmee ik werkte gaf uiteindelijk niet het resultaat dat ik wilde. Toen ontdekte ik het ideale materiaal voor mij, paté à bois. Dit is een houtpoeder wat je kunt mengen met water Als het droog is, is het licht maar toch erg stevig. Bovendien kan het net als hout geschuurd en geschilderd worden. De laatste creaties heb ik echter van zelfhardende klei gemaakt, omdat de kwaliteit daarvan enorm verbeterd is. Ik beschilder het hoofd, de handjes en voetjes met acrylverf. De laatste jaren heb ik vooral stokpoppen gemaakt. Op een gegeven moment vond ik een lijf met armen en benen niet meer noodzakelijk om toch tot een compleet ‘sfeer’beeld te komen. Na een tijdje ben ik met nieuwe technieken en andere vormen tot verschillende beelden gekomen. Bijvoorbeeld de muurornamenten die bestaan uit een gezicht en vleugels die samen een portret vormen van een fantasiewezen. Een ander soort poppen zijn de dier/slangachtige figuren, gezeten op een kegel- of andere vorm. Het karakter en uitstraling van de poppen worden voor een groot deel bepaald door kleur. Door slechts 1 of 2 kleuren met hun nuances te gebruiken, ontstaan er fantastische wezens. Sprookjes zijn de inspiratiebron voor mijn fantasie. Mijn poppen worden ‘geboren’ tijdens het maken en ‘groeien’ naar hun voltooiing.
At Utrecht I studied arts for a few years. After that I wanted to make jewelry out of clay. That didn't interest me for long and I discovered that by making fantasy dolls/creations out of clay I could really express myself. The clay I used didn't give me the result I wanted. Then I discovered the ideal material for me: paté a bois. This wood based powder, mixed with water, works similar like clay. When it's dry, it's light, yet firm. It can be sanded and painted just like wood. Now, there is more choice in selfharding clay, so I use that for the last creations. The heads of the creations ( I call them creations because I think that words like dolls or puppets are too specific for the work I am making at the moment) are painted with acrylic paint. Sometimes other parts like hands, feet or fabrics are painted too. The last few years I mostly made creations with a rod in a standard as a base to build the creation on. At a certain time I found it no longer necessary to make a complete body with arms and legs to get the result I wanted. The result I am after is mostly a fairytale/fantasy look and feeling. After a while I introduced some new forms and techniques to make different images. For example the wall-sculptures only existing of a face and wings which forms the portrait of a fantasy figure. Another variation are the animal like creatures seated on a cone and the elf-figures (smaller then the rod based figures) which have a cardboard roll for a base. The character and overall look of the creations are for the most part determined by its color. By using just 1 or 2 colors with their nuances the creation gets its fantasy appearance. Fairytales are the inspiration for my fantasy. My fantasy creations are 'born' during the process of making and 'grow' to their completion.
