| Oppermann, Fontes, 9 (c. 9) Mulier quedam Eswar nomine santi Adalberti se devovit servicio credens sue viduitatis angustias eius defensionis relevari solatio. Que cum per multos annos devotis institisset obsequiis, accidit piratas hiis in partibus advectos omnem circumquaque regionem devastasse incursu hostilitatis. Possessionibus itaque depredatis possessoribusque in captivitatem redactis prefata vidua sola relicta quid ageret, quo se verteret ignorabat omnimodus. |
Een vrouw die Eswar heette wijdde zich aan de verering van de heilige Adalbert, in de vaste overtuiging dat hij door zijn troostende bescherming de zorgen van haar weduwschap zou verlichten. En toen zij gedurende vele jaren vroom en ijverig had gewerkt, kwamen de piraten in deze streken, die bij een vijandige inval het hele gebied tot in de verre omtrek verwoestten. Toen alle eigendommen waren geroofd en de bezitters ervan in gevangenschap waren weggevoerd, wist deze weduwe - als enige achtergebleven - in het geheel niet meer wat ze moest doen en waarheen ze zou moeten gaan. | A woman called Eswar devoted herself to Saint Adalbert, she believed to get relief for her widowhood by his comforting protection. And when she faithfully had worked during many years, the pirates came from abroad to these regions and overthrew all parts of the area in a hostile attack. After all possessions had been robbed and the owners were abducted in captivity, this widow - the only straggler - did not know at all what to do and where to go. |

Nam barbari multotiens eidem appropinquantes ac pene applicantes portui interventu nubis celitus obiecte prospectum perdentes sue perversitatis conatibus visuntur elusi. Cuius assiduitate miraculi congruum nomen eidem loco videtur inditum, ut Hecmunda dicatur quasi locus ab irruptione incursionum mundatus hostilium. |
Diezelfde plaats was ook onaantastbaar door de heiligste relikwie, want hoewel ze dicht bij de kust ligt en daardoor ook open lag voor de aanvallende piraten, mogen we er niet stilzwijgend aan voorbij gaan dat zo'n ramp door Gods krachtige mededogen vaak werd afgewend, juist vanwege de verdienste van de heilige man. Als de vreemdelingen namelijk de plaats naderden en op het punt stonden in de haven aan te leggen, zagen ze zich vaak bedrogen in hun verdorven pogingen, omdat een laaghangende wolk hun het zicht benam. Door de herhaling van dit wonder bleek een passende naam aan de plaats te zijn gegeven, ze wordt namelijk Hec Munda genoemd, als het ware een plaats vrij van vijandelijke aanvallen. | The same place was also unassailable by the most holy relict, because though it was situated near the coast and therefore a target for attacking pirates, we may assume that such a disaster was prevented many times by the mercy of God, through the service of the holy man. For when the strangers approached the place and were ready to land, they were often stopped in accomplishing their wicked attempts, because a cloud did hide their visibility. As this wonder repeated, the place had a well-fitting name. On this account it was called Hec Munda, a place free from hostile attacks. |

Ex marine siquidem tempestatis eruptione continua, sicut hiis cognitum est qui maris vel viderunt vel inhabitant contigua, plurima litoribus harenarum subvehitur copia, que perurgente vi ventorum tantis cumulatur acervis, ut montibus videatur altissimis coequari. Huiuscemodi denique perfusio nimis proxima sancti viri quodam tempore consedit oratorio. Quo dum forte Roricus barbarorum rex appulisset, cunctis sibimet obsequentibus indixit, ut ocius ab edificio sacro montem harenosum dimoverent. Quod dum mane sequenti fuisset universis implere placitum, invenerunt prefatum harene montem per sanctissimi Adalberti merita, quantum iactus lapidis emitti potest, longius esse secretum. |
Ook een andere keer gebeurde er iets zeer wonderbaarlijks. Zoals degenen die het strand wel eens hebben gezien of er in de buurt wonen weten, waaien er bij langdurige storm vanuit zee grote massa's zand aan op de kust. Deze worden door het aanhoudend geweld van de wind tot zulke grote hopen opgestuwd, dat ze de hoogste bergen evenaren. Op zeker moment nu was een dergelijke zandverplaatsing zich al te dicht tegen de kapel van de heilige aan gaan nestelen en toen daar toevallig Hrœrekr, de koning van de vreemdelingen, aanlegde, beval hij zijn gehele gevolg snel de zandberg van het gewijde gebouw weg te scheppen. Toen allen dit de volgende morgen wilden gaan doen, zagen ze dat de genoemde zandberg door de verdiensten van de heilige Adalbert verder dan een steenworp van de kapel verwijderd was. | Also on another occasion something quite miraculously happened. As those who have seen the beach or live nearby know, during a lasting storm huge masses of sand blow from the sea on the coast. These are piled up on such large heaps, that they appear to be the highest mountains. These at last covered very much the direct neighbourhood of the chapel. And when by chance Hrœrekr, the king of the strangers, landed there, he ordered his retainers to remove the sandy hill from the holy building. When all wanted to fulfill this as agreed the next morning, the mentioned sandy hill was replaced at a stone's throw, due to the holy Adalbert. |
