Daar de Denen de Utrechtse kerk verwoest hadden, hield hij (*) zich doorgaans te Deventer
op, in de geest evenwel altijd in Utrecht wonende; en hoezeer hij nadat de vrede hem was gegeven zich dikwijls daarheen begaf, smartte het hem echter

As the Danes had destroyed the church of Utrecht, he (*) often stayed at Deventer, yet his heart
continually stayed in Utrecht; and although he often went there after the peace was returned, it grieved him not a little for him and others, that the

Occurunt autem Dani ejusque conatus impediunt. Sed ille tamen nihil mortis periculo absterritus salutares eis adhortationes adhibet, ut repudiatis erroribus complectantur veritates viam. At, illis obduratis animis in malitia persistentibus mortemque ipsi minitantibus, anathematis in eos sententiam vibravit. Tum vero divina ultio confestim eos persecuta est. Nam peste horrenda tanque fulminis ictu percussi omnes fere exstincti sunt, nec unquam impune tulerunt quoties Traiecti molestia eum affecere. E vestigio enim Dei judicio plectebantur, ut persaepe testati sunt ex illis paucissimi qui se vivos evasisse laetabantur. |
Eens de hem toevertrouwde kudde bezoekende, is hij naar Friesland vertrokken, om zo daar enige loten der oude dwaling mochten ontspruiten, deze uit te roeien, en de gemoederen der gelovigen door de leer van het geloof te verkwikken. Maar de Denen trokken hem tegen, en beletten zijn pogingen. Hij echter, geenszins door de vrees van de dood afgeschrikt, sprak hun heilzame vermaningen toe, opdat zij hun dwalingen verlatende, de weg der waarheid zouden volgen. Doch daar zij hardnekkig in hun boosheid volhardden, heeft hij het vonnis der vervloeking tegen hen uitgesproken. Terstond vervolgde hen de goddelijke wraak. Want door een verschrikkelijke pest, als door een bliksemstraal getroffen zijn zij bijna allen omgekomen; en nooit bleef het ongestraft, zo dikwijls zij hem te Utrecht lastig vielen. Want terstond werden zij door Gods oordeel geslagen, zo als die weinigen van hen, die zich verheugen behouden te zijn ontkomen, zeer dikwijls hebben getuigd. | He once visited the herd that was entrusted to him and he left for Friesland, to water the souls of the believers with the doctrine of the faith, in order to exterminate some former errors if they should emerge. But the Danes hindered his efforts. However he was not afraid of dying and he encouraged them with healthful exhortations, so that they should follow the path to the truth and leave their errors. However, as they persisted in their wickedness, he threatened them with death. Suddenly they were damned with divine revenge. For a horrible curse as if they were stricken by lightning, they all were killed, and it would never be without punishment how often they troubled him in Utrecht. For they were beaten by the verdict of God, as the few of them who were so glad to escape alive very often could testify. |
