CERENA - Centro de Rehabilitación Nutricional, Piura, Perú What is CERENA? CERENA is a medical center in the popular and poor district of 4 de Octubre, Los Algarrobos, about 10 min drive from the University of Piura. Here often basic needs fail, and access to medical, nutritional care and education is difficult. Therefore 2 years ago, CERENA was instigated by the Medical Faculty of this academic centre, to provide for the need of medical care and food. The centre is currently managed by a lady doctor, sra. Lourdes Kcam, with help of the doctors and volunteers of the University of Piura. The centre attends to young children from 0 to 5 to recover from serious malnutrition, and to help their mothers to develop basic and occupational skills, like alfabetization, hygiene and cooking instruction, and fabricationo domestic products, like marmelade and handbags. It also offers direct medical assistance to the children and education. How can we help? In July 2003 I became convinced of the benefits the proyects gave the people, and I asked myself how I could help. I started to realize that it was quite simple: the proyect was in need of funds. The university was itself not very well endowed with financial means and could only provide the medical assistance. To increase the number of families that could be helped by CERENA by their food or training programs, I started a fund raising program in Holland. My family and friends sent me 1000 euros with which 5 families now are supported daily. In total this means that 30 people, including 15 baby´s receive a balanced diet, where the baby´s recover from malnutrition and grow in weight and length as they are supposed to. Also they will build up resistance. Their mothers learn how to make marmelade, learn how to read and write (if necessary) and receive instruction how to provide for hygiene and how to take care of their baby´s. All is therefore aimed at auto sustainability, so that later they can apply the learned on their own. Here you find the pictures and stories of this wonderfully concrete proyect.
