Huaraz - Semana Santa, 17th-21 April 2003
Huaraz (Ancash) is the centre for adventure sports, alpinism and trekking in Peru. The Sierra town is surrounded by stunning 6,000 m mountains. Here I celebrated the Semana Santa from Good Friday to Easter Sunday and besides, I made a few daytrips in the spectacular mountains of the Cordillera Blanca.

A quite particular sight these days are
the carretillos with
an entire cooked pig: the chicharrones. Would you
care for a sandwich with some cuts of this
delightful meat?

About the Puya Raimondi (named
after the scientist who documented it)
It only grows here near the Pasto Ruri and near La Paz, Bolivia. This bromelia
species only
flourishes
every
100 years, and the flourishing period lasts about 4 years. While flourishing, it grows about
20.000 flowers.
It can become hundreds of years old. The strong thorny leaves are used for building
the typical
houses of the puna (the flat
highlands) or ´chosas´.
The pastoruri mainly consists of a snowcapped glacier, which can be climbed without climbing gear. That is what the signpost says: the ascent is difficult but not impossible. Funny text.
