Reisverslag Perú - Travelreport Perú Outings in the Sierra - Chalaco Here you find the pictures and stories of my visits to Chalaco on 27th and 28th of June. Again, click on thumbnail picture to enlarge and go back to this screen with the upper left backward key Ü Chalaco, 27-28 June 2003 Chalaco is situated about 150 km east of Piura, in the middle of the Sierra piurana. It is an 6 hr direct bus drive, of which the last 75 km are not paved. Around you see the ´chacra´s´, the agricultural fields with crops of bananas, sugarcane, lucume, mandarines, maiz, potatoes and lots of fruit. Also they grow some coffee plants. Halfway the ascent you sometimes see a beautiful scene when you surpass the clouds in the valley behind you. The woods in this part of the sierra are called bosques neblinas, for its patches of cloud that cover the mountainpeaks. Chalaco is situated at 2400m above sea level. We went with a university delegation to chair a meeting with farmer delegates of the villages in the valley. This because of the kick off of a large and extensive development program that is conducted by the university of piura and an non gouvernemental organisation, (ONG) Mirhas Peru. This 3 year 3 million US dollar program covers topics like economic development, health, education and organizational strength. Some scenes of the meeting with the farmers delegates. And the official group picture Here follow some pictures with collegues. From left to right with Juan Carlos, Alvara in plaza de armas and again Juan Carlos in the main street.
And we did some tourism and met with the locals.
Working visit 5-8 January 2004 These days a group of 6 students and teachers went to the mountain villages near Chalaco to continue with the questionnaires with the villagers and peasants to obtain research data about their needs and problems.
