Huaraz - 14-18 July, 2003

Huaraz (Ancash) is the centre for adventure sports, alpinism and trekking in Peru. Here, I made a few daytrips in the spectacular mountains of the Cordillera Blanca and Negra (the White and Black Mountains). For more fotos of this spectacular area I refer to my Semana Santa section on the Main page.

 colca3.jpg (126823 bytes)

Plaza de Armas with the famous in volcanic Sillar
stone built Cathedral, totally restored after
the 2001 earthquake. This square is one of
the finest colonial ones in Peru. The whole city
centre actionally is. Unique. A must see.

Monasterio de Santa Catalina

Rafting on Rio Chile with the group. Later that day we concluded the fast and furious two days with a nice lunch in a garden restaurant. I am not the only dutch guy in this picture. Quiz: Find the other one.

Colca Canyon and surroundings - 24-27 July

colca2.jpg (92290 bytes)                         colca1.jpg (69088 bytes)                                colca10.jpg (40398 bytes)

Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world. From the mirador 1200m deeper runs the Colca
river. The Cruz del Condor guarantees daily a morning view on a flock of majestically floating condors.
There are said to be about 60 left in the area. The sight on these giant birds is breathtaking.

Wild horses on a day hike from Pichollo to the
local geyser at about 4200 m.

Cusco and Machu Picchu - 31 July - 5 August

Cusco main square with first the 17th century Cathedral, then a view on the city from the
Sacsayhuaman inca fortress remains. On the right, children on a staircase in San Blas district

The giant sometimes 80 tons stones of Sacsayhuaman fortress.

Around Cusco

cuzco4.jpg (112052 bytes)                                                            cuzco6.jpg (481110 bytes)

A must see is the Inca fortress and andénes in Ollantaytambo. Also good canotaje (rafting) is possible on the rivers Vilcanota and Urubamba near Cusco.

vallesagrado1.jpg (41773 bytes)

Las Salineras is a surrealist experience. Over 2000
saltpans filled with naturally salted water that through
evaporation leaves tons of salt left.

Machu Picchu

 machupic6.jpg (23978 bytes)                     machpic1.jpg (72921 bytes)                      machpic4.jpg (72020 bytes)

And then the ultimate experience: Machu Picchu. This Inca temple and city complex in the green
covered mountainpeaks is breathtaking. The first picture on the left is taken from Huaynu Picchu, a nearby mountain peak, to be reached in 35 minutes from the site. In the middle the all over the world famous picture of the complex, with the industrial complex to the right, and the temple on top. To the right, the temple, the highest point, with the intihuatana sacred stone and solar clock. Said to be magnetic and positively loaded with energy. I didn´t notice, neither did my compass. However it is impressive how the inca´s cut out these forms of the red granite stones.

machupic8_2.jpg (57391 bytes)                                         machupic8.jpg (37038 bytes)                          machupic5.jpg (26701 bytes)

bus roads leading to the site, and in,                  moreover on the right one of the tame
the back the Machu Picchu mountain                   lamas strolling around all the site.
                                                                         Willing to take position totally
From the site to the upper left corner                 still in front ofmy camera.
you can see a thin line, which is the
famous last part of the Camino Inca.
