ROYAL BURNHAM ONE DESIGN CLASS

AN OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THE RBOD CLASS
This class of 21 ft day-boats was built in 1932 and the class still races actively on the river Crouch.
23 boats were originally built, 2 were lost and a new boat was built in 1997. This boat was named VICTORIA and is one of the RBODs available for charter. The Class celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2007 when it is hoped that all the surviving boats will be sailing. The boats can be sailed by 2 to 5 people and is an ideal opportunity for novices to experience the excitement of one-design racing in a simple and stable boat. As well as in Club races throughout the summer, Interclub team racing also takes place including a 2 yearly event with the Manhassett Bay Yacht Club in the USA. Sailing in RBODs can best be summed up as ‘Modern day sailing in traditional boats’.
The class is renowned for its active and friendly social scene and regular fund raising activities are held to contribute towards the restoration the boats. There are currently 2 boats being restored to their original condition. Although most of the boats are already owned and signed up for the 2006 and 2007 seasons there are some available for purchase or charter. Keen crew are always needed and anyone wanting to participate in this way will be made very welcome. This is a great time to become involved at any level in this unique class – don’t miss the chance!
