Six times up and down the mountain for a good cause!

Alpe d’HuZes

During the summer of 2005, we got the idea to cycle up the Alpe d’Huez no less than six times with a bunch of enthusiastic people.

All in one day, that is!

Six times up and down the famous mountain of the Tour de France well-known for the victories by the Dutch cyclists Joop Zoetemelk, Gert-Jan Theunisse, Steven Rooks en Peter Winnen. Many still have vivid memories of these victories, which were beyond sensational.

The plan of climbing the Alpe d’Huez received the appropriate name Alpe duZes (Alp-of-Six). It did not take us long to set the date, which, of course, will be the 6th of June (06-06-06). Not surprisingly, the start will be at 6 ‘o clock in the morning. Mrs. Erica Terpstra (former Olympic champion and chairman of NOC*NSF, our dutch Olympic committee) will start our event since she fully supports our event.

66 cyclists will climb the Alpe d’Huez. However, we do no plan to leave it at that. Besides this tremendous sports challenge, we would like to make a contribution to a good cause, i.e. KWF, the Dutch Cancer Society.

66 enthusiastic amateur cyclists, among which figures most prominently Leo Peelen, winner of silver medal in the men’s points bicycle race tournament in the Olympic games of Seoul 1988 and Fausto de Oliveira Marreiros (Nagano 1998), will accomplish this tour de force and try to raise as much money as possible for the battle against cancer.

Peter Kapitein, a devoted tri-athlete, has been asked to act as ambassador of the Alpe d’HuZes foundation. Being a cancer patient (he suffers from non Hodgkin disease) Peter was willing to do so on condition that he can participate in the climb. As a result, Peter is now in training under supervision of his treating doctor. No doubt, his presence will add splendour to the event.

We take the organization of the cycling event very seriously. The foundation has been officially established and its charter has been registered by law.

The event itself is beginning to take shape, but we are still short of something important: That is your support! Cycling is great, but raising money for a group of people, who really need it is even more rewarding. Every contribution will be much appreciated. The KWF organization is also very pleased with the initiative and lends warm support to it.
