Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa)
It is the main sight of Kandy, which is situated at the Kandy Lake in the centre.
In this temple is kept the sacred Tooth of Buddha, which came from India to Sri Lanka in the 4th century.
The temple complex, built end of 16th century, was in the beginning a modest building, but has grown through the years to a real
complex, with various shrines, Royal Audience Hall, a library and a museum.
There is a heavy security check before entering the temple (without shoes).
- On the premises of the temple complex you can buy a lotus flower (also known as a temple flower).
- Through this colourful tunnel you will reach the main temple complex.
- Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala (daughter of the King Guhasiva of Kalinga (India)), brought the tooth, hidden within
her hair, from India to Sri Lanka in the 4th century. But it was only by end of 16th century, that the tooth came to Kandy.
- Flower altar with lotus flowers before the sacred shrine, where the Tooth Relic is kept.
- The sacred shrine, where the Tooth Relic is kept, is several times per day open during the puja-ceremony.
- Royal Audience Hall with various Buddha’s, obtained as presents from various countries. The large Buddha in the middle
is from Thailand.
