The family tree
This is a page dedicated to our family tree. As many family
members now live abroad the language is English.
Size
Size of the (that is: my version) tree:
-
538 individuals on October 11, 1999
-
763 individuals on July 20, 2000
-
800 individuals on June 1, 2001
-
1562 individuals on May 1, 2009 in a "list-all" version of the tree file.
Tree custodians
First custodian (as far as we know) was late Jacob Meijer Theodoor
Vecht. His tree was a hand-typed one and already very large.
From this, Jacob Julian Vecht in Jerusalem, Jack Vecht in Melbourne,
my brother Jos and I worked on. Not so long ago we met through Internet,
of course combining efforts from now on! Soon Paul Freudman, Great Neck
(NY) joined us with great enthousiasm.
Send me an e-mail! Click here.
Let me know if you want the tree.. We can send the tree in several
formats to any family member by e-mail. The actual file size is not
very big. Send a message through the link above.
Are you a family member?
If, just if, you are not sure: your last name should be Vecht without
a "van de" or similar prefix. If you also know the family comes from
Holland or perhaps even from the city Elburg, changes are very high.
Also, recently we found a complete branch where the family name spelling
changed to "Vegt". Please send me a message with your information and
I will check it out.
We are in contact..
with others not related, but with family names Vegt or
Fecht, etc. and will help you to get in touch.
Printed tree..
It is available in Adobe's PDF format now, allowing it
to be printed on any computer, using the freely available Adobe Acrobat
Reader!
You can also bring on diskette to your local printshop
and have it printed and binded for a very reasonable price.
For privacy reasons we do not want it to be downloadable
from this site, so please send me an email if you want it.
Mystery?
There are many Vecht's in Denmark and some records of
Vecht's in the USA, but these records come from before 1830 and the
first registration of our family name.
There is a note of someone saying the family Vecht are
descendants of a Mr. Franco Mendes de Mesquita. This family adopted
the family name "Vecht" around 1700. Family graves are reported to be
present at the old Jewish graveyard at (Oud) Zuilen (Utrecht, Holland),
but we could not find any..
Then there are the records of the Pilgrim Fathers in the
archives at Leiden, Holland.
What happened when our ancestor let the family name "Vegt"
(soon later changed to "Vecht") be registered to comply with Emperor
Napoleon's law. Did he choose the name of the river close by? Did he
remember a ancient family name? If this was the case, then the Danish
Vecht's and those in the USA records may be family too..

And what about this sticker of a 1884 Vecht Fire Engine?
