This marking panel was designed for regular infantry and vehicles to identify them to friendly aircraft. The 2 strings were tied on the bottom of the respirator case which at the outbreak of of war was worn on the chest, when aircraft approached it was pulled out by the 2 loops. Also it could be mounted on top of a vehicle. The material used was celanese, a rayon type of cloth. Airborne pathfinders used it to mark droppingzones and landingzones. It was sometimes worn as a scarf.
