A toggle rope was made of about eight feet of hemp rope; a large loop was spliced on one end, on the other end a small loop fitted tightly around a rounded wooden handle. Toggle ropes were used for a wide variety of purposes like a simple belt or scaling, rock climbing when joined together.
Wartime manufacturers: G.&E.Co Ltd, H.&R.F.Ltd.
Wartime variations: Either 1/2 inch or 1 inch hemp rope was used. Also the wooden handle is seen in two shapes: straight and tapering. Sometimes the name of the manufacturer, broad arrow and date were stamped into the wooden handle.
Postwar modifications: No.
Note for the collector: On the market you will regularly find toggle ropes with string wound around the spliced ends to prevent fraying. This phenomenon is never seen on original ropes.
