September 20 2006, Tafel 9 and 12 tapdancers will travel to China to represent Holland at the Beijing
International Cultural and Tourism Festival. A big parade through the city
and several performances in theatres in and outside Beijing are part of
the festival. The theme of this years edition is tap dance. Tap groups
from all over the
world are invited. The festival is organised to
strengthen the cultural and touristic ties between China and the
participating countries. The organisation also wants to promote the Olympics in Beijing
in 2008. Tafel 9 has named the project: TAPTOI - Dutch tap dancers to China.
Here
you can find the program. The
parade is the 23rd of September. The Dutch tap dancers will step into a traditional
Chinese world with dragon dancers, Chinese dancers, Chinese musicians and
Chinese acrobats. The tap dancers are the odd man out. The parade will be
broadcast on television with an expected
audience of 10 million viewers! The Taptoi choreography is composed by Peter Kuit. Twenty years of experience in choreographing orchestrated rhythms for tap dancers result in an exciting composition: beautiful, complete, percussive with unexpected rhythmic patterns and changes. As in a samba-band, everybody has his or her own part. It's an event to see and to listen to, which lasts 10 minutes.
In the week of our departure to China, on the internet you can view a short Dutch interview and performance we had with Omroep Brabant. Also we will be part of the Dutch program 'Man bij Hond'. We don't know the date it's on television yet.
Tafel 9 organises TAPTOI. Peter Kuit and Marieke van der Ven are the professionals, as is Marijke de Braal. The other tap dancers are well trained amateurs. Tafel 9 selected them for their power, their eagerness to learn and their independent attitude. Together they form an important part of the Dutch tap dance scene. You can find them at jam sessions, concerts, festivals and in theaters. Their names are: Isabel Berenos, Christien Booij-Steutel, Bart Brolsma, Renée Hanjoel, Saskia Holthuijsen, Frederic Knapczyk, Katja Terpstra, Lisette de Koning, Stefanie Meijer, Suzanna Pezo en Anthe Tervoort.
While we're in China, Tafel 9 would love to give workshops at high schools, universities and academies. Tafel 9 also would like to meet Chinese tap dancers and Chinese musicians to work with, improvise with and maybe to perform together. On september 25, we will give a workshop and perform at the Yan Lin Dance School. The students of the school will do a performance for us.
Alongside the performances of the festival, Tafel 9 would like to do other performances. We offer the following: - The Taptoi choreography - A tap dance show of Tafel 9, full of energy; exciting, impressive and percussive. This show can be called 'The best of Tafel 9'. It consists of the highlights of the last seven years. The length of the show can vary from 2 to 20 minutes depending on the occasion. - A combination of the above is possible, also combined with a solo performance of Marijke de Braal.
Do you have contacts in China? Can you arrange performances or workshops in China? Please contact Tafel 9. Since we have to pay ourselves for the rehearsels, preparations and the flight fare, we're looking for sponsors. Would you or your company like to sponsor Taptoi? We offer publishing space for sponsors. Please contact Tafel 9 for more information. Would you, privately, like to support us? That's also possible. Our bank account is: 486 7866 'Stichting Tafel 9' in Utrecht (The Netherlands), please mention 'donation Taptoi'. Contact
Tafel 9: During the tour we'll keep up a weblog, so you can keep track of us in China. The address of the weblog is: www.taptoi.waarbenjij.nu. After the tour we'll organise a performance on october 15 at 8 p.m. in Amsterdam for everyone who has been part in Taptoi (for location email info@tafel9.nl)!
