I started with film projection in 1976. I worked in City, Asta and Metropole, in a town called Enschede, with Philips FP-5
and FP-56 as well as with Ernemann IX projectors, all equiped
with carbon arc light sources.
I lived in Hengelo and I was able to work also at Cinema Palace after some time. This was a new challenge as this theatre was equiped with two DP-70 70mm film projectors which I liked very much. A second theatre was build and equiped with a FP-30 projector. Automation of the theatre was then switched from the Philips "static punch chart" system to the Diode matrix system. This was rather a big advancement with respect to reliability and ease of use. Is there someone out there with experience with the punch chart system?
In 1978, after the summer vacantion I went to Groningen to the university. At that time I worked as a projectionist in Diana and Apollo in Assen, a town nearby Groningen. Equipment used then were two Philips FP-5 projectors and one FP-20 with no-rewind installation.
Later on, I think in 1981, I started to work in City in Groningen, a "three screen cinema" with Ernemann-8b and Ernemann-X equipment. I learned to use film glue.
In 1984 I was given the opportunity to work also in the Camera Theatres in Groningen, the leading theatres at that time in Groningen equiped with DP-70, FP-30, FP-20 and FP-5. I ran my first 70mm Film : Dune. Quite an experience! Furthermore it was possible to run film interlocked in more than one auditorium at one time. Heard some horror stories on that, glad that I have never encountered problems.
Right now I have a complete different job. I only work with projectors and film when I really like it. However I find it very hard to find any time next to the family, my job and all other things which are also very interesting, relevant and fun.
I always appreciate getting feedback, please send that by
E-Mail to me.
