When you are about to do a cycle trip or holiday you probably like to know if the weather is just as beautiful as on that picture in that book and what's even more important if the pass is closed or not. On this page you can find some actual information useful for cyclists: webcams, weather links, information about closed passes and in case the weather forecasts are not very promising you can check a 'tv schedules' section to enjoy cycling laying down on the sofa.

Closed Passes ('Wintersperre'/snow, for special traffic)

The Alps and the Pyrenees are the only mountains in Europe form real barriers between countries. A number of passes in these mountains can be closed and because a lot of roads are important for the traffic there are some traffic information sites which give special information about passes being closed. In terms of closure there are 3 types:

Passes permanently closed during the winter (even if the pass is snowfree) mostly from november till april . In German this period is called 'Wintersperre'.
Passes 'permanently' open, in case of snow pass will be made snowfree. This depends of the importance for the traffic.
Passes open if there is no snow.

So for each pass there are three possibilities: closed (gesperrt, fermé), open (frei, ouvert) or snow (Schnee, neige)

2. Passes (temp.) forbidden for motorized traffic

There are passes and climbs were motorized traffic is not allowed during some time.

4. Routes forbidden for cyclists

There are a few climbs forbidden for traffic. This can have several reasons: too dangerous like tunnels or a military road.
