Searching

Last update:  27-Jan-2003

My site just contains a fraction from what you can find on the web. Today it's not the question if information is on the web but where can you find it. For that reason I'll give you some directions where to start.

Profusion: searching in the search engines

My favorite search engine for years

- Many hits while it searches in 12 main search engines, skipping double links
- Nice advanced search with AND, OR and Searching phrases, Links checking
- Nice features like opening New windows, Sorting on Relevance / Title / URL / Source

Search tips: searching on one word gives you probably many many hits. To refine your search you can use 'boolean' operators like AND, OR, NOT (like?). In most search engines you can use the next characters:

AND
OR
NOT
+
space
-
PHRASE between qoutes ""

1. Searching in Directories or Categories

Sites within directories are reviewed by editors to determine whether a site is appropriate for submission and what's the best category. In most cases sites have to apply on certain policies.

Yahoo > Recreation > Sports > Cycling - More than 2000 cycling sites

Yahoo! Directory
  Sports > Cycling

just this category all of Yahoo!

Help
Home > Recreation > Sports > Cycling

DMOZ Open Directory Project > Sports > Cycling - This is the most important one because partner sites like AOL Search, DirectHit, HotBot, Google, Lycos, Netscape Search make use of this directory.
