Mohamed Ali Eleuwa, Wadi el-Khateet, Egypt-photographed by Zbigniew Kosc © 2000
.............

Mahmed Abu Eleuwa lives in Wadi el-Khareet and works in the
sugar cane fields, which is a typical occupation in this area.
The harvest is hard, and the work is badly paid, but there is
no other possibility for him to support his mother, wife and
children.

In the evening the young men come together. They drink sweet
Egyptian tea and talk endlessly, making plans concerning
marriage or well paid work abroad. They also play music, and
they dance, because it makes their life better in the present.
Mahmed Abu Eleuwa sings and plays the tamboura excellently. He
improvises using the same tunes as other Ababda musicians, but
he also follows the musical tradition of the Nubian neighbours,
imitating their vocal and rhythmic elements.
