Your good old MPC can look like this:
The installation is very easy!!!!!!
You need an IDE flat cable and IDE power connector if your MPC still
has the disk drive built in.
I took the cable and connector out of an old pc.
If you already have an internal ATAPI zip installed, you can skip most of this
guide.
The card reader I installed worked just fine with old OS 1.11.
But you might need the latest 1.20 OS (feb 2005), which has better
support for card readers.
I think you better can update, because if the reader is not working,
you can't connect the disk drive anymore
if you have adjusted the power cable as I described below.
- Remove the Power cable!!
- Remove all screws from the metal bottom plate (15 in total).
- Remove diskdrive and both cables that are connected to it. (on both sides).
To remove the power cable from the main board, you can press on one
side with a screwdriver and then
pull the wire. It will come out on the right a bit and now do the same
on the left:
The power cable need to be adjusted to fit the card reader which has a normal PC IDE power connector
So remove the connector that went to the disk drive.
Now we need a normal PC IDE device power connector like this one:
I just took it of an old broken power supply.
But you can also look inside a pc and cut off an unused cable.
Most of the times there are one or two unused left.
We only need 2 wires of the power cable, the red and black one, so cut the rest:
Now it look like this:
Solder the wires to each other and put some tape around it.
Be sure to tape it properly so that the tape cannot move to left/right!!
I took care of that by doing some extra tape horizontal over the first
tape.
Offcourse there are better solutions then tape, but it's the fastest :).
You need an IDE flat cable for connecting the card reader to the connector on the
mainboard next to the one which was used for the disk drive.
I have routed the flatcable under the card reader.
That's the best way to fit it proberly and not making it look like a
big mess.
Ok you are finished!!!.
Check if there are no screws laying around somewhere in the MPC.
Now test the reader. (don't close the MPC without testing!).
I used an compact flash card which came with my MPC1000, so it put some test files on it:
If it works, you see Device: ATAPI.
If it not works, check the card reader manual for possible jumper settings.
The reader accepts various kinds of cards, but I only tested compact flash cards.
Here's a tip. If you don't like the long loading time of WAV files, use .SND files.
They load three times as fast and that's no joke!!.
Where to get the reader!
I bought mine from a German shop, but I believe it's not available anymore http://shop.vv-computer.de/shop/info/370666
You can google for IISDMC and you will find the following and even more:
